ok this is weird, after another smaller water change,
ph-7.4
nitrates- 40
Tap Water
ph-7.0-7.4
nitrates- 5
What the hell is going on here?

kinda some variable readings going on. What brand tests are you using?

aquarium pharmaceuticals. COuld have made a mistake in testing, who knows. ill give it another test tomorrow

alright heres the rundown of exact tests, no mistakes made by me, after another 25% change. The readings of the tank water jsut wont move
Tap Water
ph7
nitrates 0-5ppm
Tank Water
ph6
nitrates40+ppm

The prior test with the high ph was an error, these are exact readings of what the test showed
Also when you test your water does it matter where in the tank you take it from, like dottom or surface because i jsut use surface water, idk if that could effect anything but thos whole situation is weird and frustrating

Ok when you are doing your water changes are you turning you filters off b/c when you do that sometimes once they get turned on again they spit out old dirsty ass water and weird chunks of stuff. Could be messing with the new water coming in.

well the one filter turns off automatically when the water gets too low, so yes, but the water change was done hours ago, so would that really affect it that much. Tomorrow i think i am going to change all my filter media. and do another water change.

First thing you listed nitrates twice, but I will assume the first is nitrites.
Things I do when testing with the API test kit.
-rinse the caps and vials with warm tap water, then aquarium water
-with the pH test, first two drops go into the sink or trash then add the 3 drops to the vial, this will give you more accurate pH readings
-for nitrate tests shake them alot, both bottles before use for 30 seconds and the vial after both sets of 10 drops have been added, shake for 1 minute, then compare the color after 5 minutes.

I always take water to be tested from about 4-5 inches below the surface.
