im getting no where near the growth rate out of my male dovii. most people say 12 inches in a year. mine lives in pristine water but i do only feed once a day. id say mine is 7-8 inches in a year. make it almost a year in a half. i went through my posts and recieved my dovii on feb 24 2010 and hes just now 7 inches.

deff male. i feed nls pellets with krill and minnows for treats. hes in a 120 gallon. i do 50 percent water changes weekly in all my tanks. back in the day when i grew out jags festae and all the other cool cichlids they seemed to pretty much grow accordingly but this dovii is slow. either one feeding a day isnt enough or i got a slow growing dovii

had a female with him. they bred twice and then he killed her overnight. besides that hes got some lg clawed frogs in there. he doesnt seem to bother them since there not fish.

I think that you most likely already answered your own question, you have a slow growing dovii.

It happens, not all fish within the same species, or even within the same batch of offspring will grow as fast, or as large, as others kept under the exact same conditions. At 7" once a day feeding should be enough, any idea what the nitrate levels are on WC day? Just wondering what kind of waste output comes from your lg clawed frogs? (I have zero experience with frogs)

Try buying another dovii or male Parachromis and dividing the two. Or get another female but divide them this time. by using this method it has on numerous accounts worked to get slow growing cichlids to hit a growth and color spurt;) It may take me awhile to explain why and how this works but it does!! Also i used to feed twice a day every day but now because of work i can only feed twice a day 3-4 days a week the rest is once a day. temps up around 82. start off with not feeding him for a day or two then two small meals a day, then increase the amounts a little bit the next day etc. but the competition with the divider has done many great things for my fish, good luck

thanks for the replies. i do have a 4 inch male dovii that is actully one of his offspring. he is in my pond. once colder weather arrives ill pull him out and use the divider and see if he catches up to the larger then make a decision on which one to get rid of.

I agree.
I bought 10 Dats a year ago. They were all about the same size when I bought them. They are all in the same tank getting fed the same and so on. Some Dats are 5" to 6" and some are only 3". I power feed making sure everyone gets fed and temps are high and some of the Dats are just runts lol.
