I've found many of the thorichthys species to be slow growers for me. I've kept meeki, maculipinnis, and mixteco golds.

+1 on the Cubans. They few I have kept over the years have all been slow growing.

Herichthys bartoni is a slow grower, and stays small in comparison to other similar looking aggressive cichlids. And also has many color phases, the one below is barely 4"-5".

Hypselecara temporalis (Chocolate Cichlid) are pretty slow growers.

Severums are super cool and are slow growers. I bought mine at 3" in 2010 and he is 8" now.
