Slowing pump flow rates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've heard that it is a very BAD idea to restrict the inflow or the outflow so if this is true it's obviously not talking about centrifigal pumps, so what is another common pump type used in sumps?

Diaphragm or piston type pumps are available too, but they're really uncommon for water movement in this hobby. It's bad to restrict inflow to a centrifugal pump, but valving off the return won't hurt it at all.

I'llbedamned..

Easy how hearsay turns so quickly to fact. I've never seen any return pump (to my memory) either standalone or in a canister that did not use the conventional Centrifugal impeller design.

Oh well, thread successfully highjacked :naughty:

The methods listed above seem to still apply, however it also seems that an inline ballvalve will work equally well, and may be a simpler solution! Thanks everyone!

thanks for all the responses. i have a quietone 4000, i think is centrifugal, lol. but i was thinking about T it and then running the t to either my bio again or maybe a filter sock.

either a tee or a ball valve would be fine. Your pump is centrifugal for sure:)

T and a ballvalve back into the sump is best unless you want up upsize your overflow...

or if yer really lazy just add a syphon line with a ballvalve... its what i did.. works great... most of the water flows through the syphon tube which i keep choked off a bit to keep a slight trickle going through the overflow... this also allows me to suck water off the bottom of the tank...
