SLURPING SUMP OUTPUT...???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So if I screw a hole in the downturned 90 how big should I go? It needs to be big enough to put a plastic tube in it, correct? I assume the plastic tube is there to catch water which flows strong enough that some escapes through the hole...???

No actually you don't need the tube. Sorry about that. That's kinda specific to how a Beananimal drain works.

A Durso just needs an air inlet and starting as small as you can is usually best. A bigger hole can lead to fluctuations in water level in the display. You'll solve the slurping/whirlpool effect, but you'll move the water up and down creating a whirlpool every 5-10 seconds or so.

I usually start pinhole sized and work up from there. Dursos aren't perfect but with a bit if tinkering can be helpful. And pvc fittings are cheap so experimenting around with them won't break the bank.

Worth a shot to start....

Downward facing 90* is a good way to remedy it. With only one drain, however, I'd be nervous. One immediate fix would be to drill a hole on the downward 90* outside the tank, and using air line tubing. You can quiet it down substantially, but you'll always hear it.

That's a good idea ....

Is that the only drain? I'd be nervous with a single as well. You could drill another in or if that's too much you could use a small eshopps style box at the level where if the water gets too high it'll run into the box and drain to your sump.

Just a little insurance.... I use those boxes as drains on my drip system fry tanks that I chose not to drill.

So the water is going down into the sump from here & you can see the whirlpool effect that's causing the excessively load slurping noise.

I think the white PVC 90 on the outside of the tank is your problem. You need to introduce air to that side in order to prevent the slurping. If you were to replace that 90 with a PVC or ABS Sanitary T with a cap I think that would significantly quiet things down. You would just want to make sure that the top of the cap on the sanitary T is just slightly above the rim of the tank; this can easily be accomplished with a small piece of pipe if the fitting itself is not above the tank's rim. Tapping the 90 might work, but drilling into fittings can lead to cracks and since the fitting is below your water level, that would make me uncomfortable. My old 270 had sanitary T's like the one pictured below...I just used a microfiber rag folded over itself a few times to muffle the sound and it worked really well (you could hear the hum of the pumps over the drain).

The overflow on the left is kinda what I'm referring to (using the sanitary T for the drain will result in less noise than useing a standard T like the one pictured on the right). You can drill a hole in the cap without worrying about leaks since that is above your tank's water line or as I mentioned, you could just use a microfiber or cotton rag folded over several times and placed on top of the T to muffle the sound. Both methods should work.

Good Luck.
