Small 10g Saltwater Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Two of my hermit crabs switched their shells last night. My Scarlet Hermit Crab upgraded to one of the larger shells I added and the Tiny(Dwarf) Blue Algae Hermit Crab took over the Scarlet's old shell:

nice setup dude i m also thinking on same lines

And now that my red slime algae is near non-existant, I may get rid of one of the Margarita Snails and the Scarlet Hermit Crab as well just to free up some space and to make sure the algae in the tank doesn't completely disappear. I would like the snails and hermits to thrive without having to provide any algae wafers or any other kind of food.

Your hermits will eat leftover food and stuff, you really shouldn't worry about them eating. And if you only clean one pane of glass, there will be plenty of food for your snails. I only scrub the front pane and let the other three go wild. Works well in the food department. And its my understanding that there really isn't anything that eats red slime algae. Have you seen them eat it and, if so, what was eating it? I've got a small outbreak myself that I'm treating with phos ban.

hey, how much would you guesstimate this set up cost you once stocked?

my setup estimates:
-10gal tank - $12
-150gph Marineland filter - $20
-Live Sand - $15ish
-Rock - $10 (depends on how many pieces you get)
-Salt - $5ish

without fish and fake plants, i paid about $65-$70. I also use Live Seawater for my water changes so I don't need to mix salt every week. Also don't use a protein skimmer. I hope that helps. Its a really basic estimate based on what I got.

Thanks! small salt tanks are easy to setup and fairly cheap compared to larger salt setups. Only problem is you have to be a bit more careful with smaller tanks because there is very little room for error. Small amounts of water evaporation will raise your salinity pretty quick because of the small volume of water. But if you take good care of your tanks and check your salinity and what not on a regular basis then you shouldn't have any problems

I only clean the front pane as well. Sometimes I will clean the sides, but only if there is excessive amounts of algae. And as for the red slime algae, the Mexican Turbo and the Margarita Snails ran through my algae problem within a week. Astrea Snails are pretty good eaters as well, but if you pick up a few Mexican Turbos then you should see it slowly disappear

I've got 10 astrea snails and they didn't even look at it. I've been meanin to get me a turbo snail...Guess he just got bumped to the top of the list. lol. Thanks.

yeah, I will say the Turbos eat a lot better than the Asteas. They also can get up to 4" in diameter, but they tend to average in the 2"-3" range. The Margaritas are sometimes refered to as Black Turbo Snails. They stay smaller and their foot is black or real dark brown. I have both, but the best eater is for sure the Mexican Turbo Grazer by far. What size tank do you have? I have 3 Hermits and 5 Snails in my 10g and they do more than enough for me. I was recommended to use up to 10 snails, but for me this wasn't necessary.

ALSO I put a video up on my Youtube Channel of this tank. It's just a continuous full tank shot, but it's better than a picture in my opinion lol
Link to my page is in my signature along with links to my other tanks and my 225g build thread. Check them out!

Well my Tiny(Dwarf) Blue Algae Hermit Crab died the other night. Not quite sure why. None of my other Hermits, Snails, or Damsels seem sick, hurt, or stressed.

Anyway..

UPDATED STOCK LIST

-Blue Star Damsel (Pomacentrus Alleni)
-3 Stripe Damsel (Dascyllus Aruanus)
-Tiny(Dwarf) Red Algae Hermit Crab (Clibanarius Digueti)
-Scarlet Hermit Crab (Paguristes Cadenati)
-Mexican Turbo Grazer Snail (Turbo Fluctuosa)
-Margarita(Black Turbo) Snail (Margarites Pupillus) [x2]
-Astrea Snail (Astraea Tecta)
-Ninja Astrea Snail (Astraea Phoebia)

I'm afraid my Ninja Astrea Snail is dead as well. He hasn't moved in a few days and I never see him "open his door" or come out to eat anymore. I'm going to give it a few days until I actually pronounce him dead. Anyone know a good way to check if a snail is still alive?
