Im looking for an easy fish to breed to use as feeders for my 5 juvie oscars who im hoping to pair off eventually. I want a fish thats quick and always willing to breed. I know guppies are easy but they will barely be a snack for my always hungry little fellas. I have 30 gal setup, now i just need the fish! Suggestions?

sailfin mollies? Full grown they can be 15cm

Mollys were an option, is there any other fish with a more rapid breeding rate/ fry survival. Would a pair on convicts be a good option? I know they care for their fry instead of trying to eat them

Convicts reproduce a lot, but take forever to grow to a feeder size. Mollys are a better option. You can also do self cloning crayfish. Survival rate is very good and they are healthy for your fish. You could put 3 in a 30g.
You could try a larger cichlid, but I wouldn't recommend cons.

Honestly mate, sailfins like all mollies breed like rabbits haha. you could get a pair or 2 pairs and you'd be set. thats what I use now haha

convicts can be aggressive and grow quite big. its not worth the effort. not for feeder fish.

All ive ever raised were aggressive cichlids. Thats np there. The only reason Im favoring convicts over any livebearer is because of the difference parenting skills lol theres days when im not home all day. I could see the livebearers having fry and eating them before i even get home! And being that i have future breeding plans for my oscars, i would like to enjoy and view the process of cichlids breeding (even if their just for feeders)

I used to breed cons. It takes months for them to reach a feeder size. Even guppies will reach 1" in half the time.

Being that oscars are also living garbage disposals whom eat just about anything at any time ( i also have a jag whom only eats live) i want larger quantities of surviving fry. And im guessing that they dont call convicts the rabbits of the water for no reason lol
