once the channel cat gets too big im going to sell him to my lfs

But how long you keeping them together? the channel will rapidly outgrow the clown and the channel needs cold water and get to 4ft+ while the clowns get to 1' but take a long time to get to that size and need tropical waters.

I would think that the louch is hiding the do dig pits under gravel and catfish will eat any fish that can fit in there mouth

Don't under estimate channel cats. The big they get the bigger their appetites get. If you tank is big enough I would add a few more CLs. They really do like to be in larger numbers. I would say 5 or 6 at the least.
