Small cichlids for a 29?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yea, I did some research after I found out he was dyed, and most dyed fish are lucky to hit their full adult size, so I'm not expecting much out of the little terror...

More important than him having a ladyfriend, would be that the tank looks full. I can't stand an "empty" tank!! >< Even though my piranhas could find uses for all of the convict fry that I don't want/need. lol I'd rather not have a bunch of convict fry kicking around though.

All of my tanks are up and cycled, so as soon as I figure out what I can do with it, I'll be picking up the decor for this tank (then the fish) and finishing this tank before moving on to the next one (my 75 gal piranha tank)

For perspective...

that's a 1 gallon Kritter Keeper, he was only in that for the picture.

If you consider non cichlids, a school of 6-8 tiger/rosy barbs and red eye, bueno aires, widow tetras will do gr8 with convicts. I also have a 4.5" convict in 33gal tank, more astonishingly he attacks only big fishes and cichlids, hes peaceful with his tank mates that include include a shoal of 8 small 1" serpae tetras, and some tiger barbs.

In a 29g, two cons is all you will need. Cons can be very impressive once they hit max size and get nuchal humps. Err on the side of caution and leave the cons alone.

Very good advice:headbang2

IMO tho I'd ditch the Cons for the Red Jewel cichlid. I just bought a pair last weekend for my 30 (36" x 12") and they're perfect. Very colorful as well. I have kept GBR's in this tank too but they are not very hardy and overall I was not as impressed with them as I expected.

The Red Jewel is an African but can live in a generally wide range of pH and prefers water temps between 74-80F. They are very hardy, easy to keep cichlids, and are not picky eaters

I would not recommend mixing any other cichlids with a pair of convicts in that small of a tank. 2 cons are going to be the max IMO

convicts are really aggressive when they breed. I wouldn't try putting anything else in with them.

And use the 35, if you can. The bigger the tank, the better.

is there no edit function on posts?

Sorry it took me for freakin ever to reply. It's winter here, and country internet does not make friendly with winter storms.

There is an edit function...but I don't remember if there's a post limit on it or not.... ><

I've decided that I'm probably going with a firemouth, just for different colors.
