Hello,

I have been keeping fish for more than 30y. (most of the time reef tanks), but only now am considering my first ray: a specific marbled motoro male

A good friend of mine imported a few marbled motoros some months ago and one particular male has caught his (and, now, mine) attention.

It has no more than 20-22cms (8-9") and has (apparently) fully developed claspers. Maybe 1,5" in size. These claspers are ~4 or 5 times the ones of another marbled male that came in the same import with the same (or even slightly bigger) disc size. Furthemore, they´re both eating very well but only the other male has grown in these months (he is now around 11" or even maybe 12").

I´ve been reading (mostly here) 3 diff possible reasons for the fact some marbled males never grow more to be more that 12-13": (i) like happens with all animals some are small others normals, others "giants"; (ii) they´re just stunted; (iii) that there may be smaller sized marble motoros (a different "breed").

Without geeting too much in that issue and theories, my question has to do with the relation between maturity and growth: is it (more) likely that this ray has most of his growth done, since it is mature? or is it possible that although mature, it still has a lot of growth ahead?

I ask this because I don´t have a big tank available for it and cannot upgrade unless I move (my apartment floor might not handle another "big" tank..). I´ll put it in a 5x2x2 with a "rescue" asian arowana (and pleco that may be moved to another tank) as occupant. If it stays on the (very) small size, and although that tank is far from optimal, I believe it may be enough (assuming I will take care of all husbandry aspects, with more WC to compensate).

Please note, that if the male starts - somehow - to have "normal" development and growing like motoros should, I will not keep it.

I have agreed with my friend that under those circumstances I will return (resale) the animal and he will gladly receive it back. Otherways I would not consider taking it (nor would my friend consider passing it to me).

But I am very curious regarding this aspect.
Your opinions, please.
Thanks in advance

Some marbles dont get very big. Also, male rays usally stay smaller than females.

I would give it a go!

Thanks for the reply, Anders.
I will give it a go (since I have the "put option" in place), but was interested in knowing your thoughts on the question raised above:
maturity vs growth

I have found that captive born freshwater rays tend to start to mature at a smaller size but I don't believe that has any effect on their eventual size, at least in my experience that has not been true.

I've been keeping Marbles for like 5-6 years.

If his claspers are that big now good luck growing him out more then a foot.

I have one that was imported fully mature 3 years ago at 7 inches. After 3 years I still don't think he's 10 inches across.

Post some pics..... There's a few of us on here that think Marble max size varies a great deal and even think we might even have some visual signs that may be signs of eventual max size..... IF you post pics it will help us confirm or deny our theory......

Thank you for your replies.

DB,
As I mentioned above I will be pleased if he stays small; that would mean I would be able to keep him.

He is not at my place (yet), but I will - for sure - take pics as soon as I get him and post here

If you do not have a sump then I would try to upgrade to the same size tank but with the biggest sump on it that you can get away with....ideally 4x2x2 as this will give you much more volume and give a far more stable water quality.

Specially for you, DB

as you may see, the disc has ~20 cms (8 inches)

i also have a motoro like this, not a marbled, but ive had him for about 2 years and he is not getting any bigger, he eats, when i got him my female was way smaller (8"). now she is like 14+" and he is a lil 10" or so, with 1.5-2" claspers, he used to try all the time to mate with her, then i locked him up for a while due to aggression, now it seems like he's giving up on getting some ass, but i dont think he's gonna grow anymore, is this common??

Thanks
Sean.
