Small, easy to keep tarantulas..?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Avicularia versicolor is really nice..Any info? Also forget the small and colourful part..I just want docile now after checking out some of the nicer species :D

I was on my local exotic shop (http://www.coldheartexotics.co.uk/Stock%20List%20page.html) and they seem to have these:

SPIDERS
• Chile Rose
• Vietnam Black
• True Red Leg
• Thai Tiger
• Indian Stripe Leg
• Pink Beauty
• Mexican Red Knee
• Goliath Bird Eater
• Haitian Brown
• Red Rump
• Golden Leg Trapdoors
• Black Trapdoors
• Togo Starburst
• Sri Lankan Ornamental
• Red Slate Ornamental
• Indian Ornamentals
• Fringed Ornamentals
• Salmon Pink Bird Eater

But a pet beetle? That sounds pretty dam awsome to me :D But anyway..Thats the T's they have listed :D

That's why I listed these first:

Cyriocosmus elegans-Trinidad Dwarf 1"-2"
Paraphysa scrofa-Chilean Copper 3"-4"
Paraphysa parvula - Chilean Gold Burst. 3"-4" ?
Euathlus sp. "Flame" 2"-3"

This is our Cyriocosmus elegans:

But I like the Grammostola pulchra-Brazilian Black, it's a good beginner spider as well but it is definitely bigger then the 1-2" range.

I didn't realize where you live, Jessica could recommend the place she buys hers from. I checked out the website and one thing that I would caution is that they only have listed the common names. It is best to find out what the sciencifitic name is, because there are few that could be called the "true red leg".

Of the ones they have listed some are very pretty spider but not really beginner species or docile. Out of the list I would recommend is the Chiliean Rose (Grammostola rosea), Pink Beauty(Eupalaestrus campestratus) and the Mexican Red Knee(Brachypelma smithi )

I personally like the Avicularia versicolor they are a bright blue when they are a sling and as they mature they will be like a darker red. The care is fairly simple. They need more humidity then a Brachy and they need a tall cage to climb since they are arboreal. They will shoot "poop" at you and they can be quick but for the most part they are docile.

They will if they feel threatened. It's how they defend themselves. In the two years I think that we only have had it happen once but it missed. The Avicularia avicularia (pink toe) is a great starter arboreal species. It is readily available and fairly cheap. The one that they are listed as a True fire leg is a Brachypelma emilia. It is a great beginner species as well.

Thanks! I like the red kneed and the red legged so I think that if I do manage to get one itll be the red legged :D Thanks alot everybody :p

I think that you will have good luck with either one. It's probably is better that you are thinking about getting a larger species, because they will be easier to handle, if you are looking at handling it. We have two 6" red knees and a red leg all have a great temperament and are colorful. The red leg will stay a little smaller then the red knee. We even let kids handle the red leg.
