My LFS is having a Labor Day sale and my QT tank is open.
They have one of my favorite fish from South America, Flagtail Prochildous.
The thing is they are TINNIE TINY. I have never EVER seen them this small. They were about 1 inch or 1 inch and a half at the most. How did they get them in stock so small?
They litterally were like ____________ long.
I have always bought mine at about 2-4'' long.
I have never raised them from baby size.
I am thinking about picking up 4 and growing them up. They are 19.99 each but there is a 30 percent discount on live fish so it will be a good deal.
What will they eat at this small size? I am thinking of getting them spirlina flakes, spirlina brine shrimp, veggie flakes, and veggie frozen foods.
Are they hard to care for at this small size?
Any help is great.

Wow that's tiny! Good luck if you do get them. Sorry, no experience with them at that size. I've always got them around the 2-1/2 to 3" size. Mine loves fresh cucumber and zucchini. The little ones should be able to eat that as well. Also the algae wafers they should be able to rasp on. Post pics if you get them.

I said the same exact thing. Are flagtails captive bred now?

I'm not sure. But everything I've read has said they have not been bred in captivity. They are almost like salmon in that they migrate up rivers and waterfalls to spawn.

I have never seen them that small either. The smallest that I can recall were between two and three inches in length.

I ended up getting one, but I think he may have gotten eaten, haven't seen him today, but he may also be hiding in the plants.
I am going to get a bigger one but will wait until they get bigger ones (3-4'') ones in.
Here are some pictures.

This guy is so cute, hopefully he is hiding.

Darn... the little guy must have jumped, he was eating well yesterday and it looked like the bigger guys let him be. Then today, he is missing. He was in the plants yesterday.

just wait and get a larger one
Def am, I love flagtails!

Darn, sorry to hear that. Always sucks when you lose a fish. What other fish were in the tank?
A chocolate cichlid, severum cichlid, 2 geophagus (ablias and red head tapajos), 4 red hook silverdollars, 4 black bar silver dollars, royal pleco, green phantom pleco, lima shovelnose, and a small green terror.
