how big are they? never heard of them before!!!
hey, just thought of this, not sure if this is a wise idea or not: there is a lake across the street from where I live-do you think I maybe able to find live organisms in the water there like daphnia (again, not sure if this is too early of not) the only obvious down side to this is chemicals/pesticides/fertilizers that may leak into the lake as there are houses surrounding it...what are your thoughts...
There not that big, about the size of a small earthworm. I think they green little worms just big enough to put on a hook. If they are too big, then cut them in half.
You won't need to cut them up, just give them whole. I have baby blue dempseys that are a quarter inch eating them whole with a problem, and growing like weeds. They are even catcing up to their normal siblings in a week of separation.
Daphnia is a great choice, but you will have to culture them yourself. It is not hard, you just need a large container to do so.
Pound for pound though, blackworms are the cheapest and easiest to get a hold of. When you step up you can culture leafworms (redworms) easily too. I would try livebearers like platies or swords over guppies, much larger batches and faster growth rates.
Good luck, do you have pics of the batch and the set
How about getting some tiny red wigglers for them? You could cut them into smaller pieces if they was too big. Most places that sell bait have them. Also I have heard of people using captive bred maggots to feed their pets.
Smaller fry work great. Guppies, Mollies or other livebreeders. Cichlid fry also works great.
Blackworms are a great source of nutrients and are the right size for large fry, if you can find a local source.
With the right delivery process, I'm pretty sure you could get them to eat frozen foods. I soak/thaw frozen food in a shot glass with some tank water. Then once the frozen cube is broken down, I suck it up with a turkey baster and shoot it at the cluster of fry. This makes it swirl around and move like life food and the fish attack it and eat it without ever realizing it isn't alive.
Haha i wouldnt have a clue about NJ mate! Good luck getting some though! Yeah im from down under, ive got a mate that breeds monoculus. It really is like having another full time job. Trust me though get those big ones out of there! Its a recipe for disaster and sometimes they even bite off more than they can chew and end up dead with a big fry hanging out of their mouth.
thanks all!!! yes i got a pair of convicts over the weekend...so hopefully they will start reproducing asap! lol...i will post some pics, i've been meaning too but havne't found the time in the past! but will get some soon! i got some blackworms-tubifex worms-not sure which they were (might be the same thing but different name?) threw some of those in there and only a handful of the fry went for them ...there were leftovers on the bottom of the tank..so i will try again tomorrow...these guys vary in size from a quarter of an inch all the way up to an inch now!
toby-yeah i've tried that before with no luck! i don't really want to "starve" them at this age ya know to try and get them to eat frozen...
dnye-yeah i'm working on getting the one big guy out-was watching him today stalk and sometimes nip at the smaller ones...by the end of the week i should have another tank cycled!
will keep you guys updated! and with pics
