Nice build looking forward to the finished product , I used to have a cwd many years ago , he did used to mess the water up but most of his poop used to go on the strip of Astro turf (fake grass) which made cleaning not so bad as I just used to take out the strip and hose it off , his water was in a large deep (8") raised container with rocks at the side to climb in I used to change this twice weekly as he used to it clean in , he also used to dive into it from the branches above which was always fun to watch 
I never had fish in with him though but I'd imagine the water to get pretty messy , imo at least 50% twice a week to keep it safe for fish
