Hello,

I need a recommendation on a small newt/salamander that is fairly cheap and easy to obtain. I will be keeping it in a "critter cage", that's roughly 8x5x5.

Also please advise me on what a typical set up might be. I know they need water and land (atleast the terrestrial ones do). I forgot to mention I want a terrestrial specimen.

A native species is preferable too, since I wont be using a heater. I am located in the US in southern CA. Thanks

you could get a red eft, They stay small and you will be able to find plenty of info on them. try looking those up.

Cool, how big do these guys get? Could you guys also tell me what a typical set up would be like? Like what kind of substrate etc. And these guys can fit in an 8x5x5?

Well...as a general note, small cages never do well. If you are expanding into reptiles and amphibians, your critter keeper might be better used as a rearing space for feeders.

As long as you can provide a gradient of temps and humidity within that enclosure, it will work fine. Here is a link to one for sale. These guys are pretty reputable dealers so you should not have a problem with working with them but I would wait for the weather to cool down before you have a salamander shipped.
