Maybe its a weird question but, would putting a pair of smaller cichlids with some bigger cichlids make them more able to defend themselves over their bigger companions ? like lets say, you put a pair of firemouths with maybe 1 JD, 1GT and 1 salvini. I know that alone the firemouth would get destroyed but if its a pair would it be able to defend itself if theres enough tank room ?

Mixing cichlid as in bigger and small is a treacherous terrain. The one you mentioned are aggressive at certain level and territorial as well.
Smaller pair stand very less chance to live in peace and harmony.

thats what i was thinking would happen. thanks

By addings several smaller cichlids to out number the larger ones is not a way to reach viability. Unless they are paired up and spawning they are not going to say let stik together and fight.

With a big enough tank and enough cover, it is possible. I currently have a pair of convicts in with an adult citrenellum and they work out fine. There are plenty of hiding spots within driftwood and rock work for the cons to get out of the way if they need to. The cons spawn pretty regularly in the tank.

The tank is a 6 foot, 135 gallon.

I also have a friend that had a pair of neets in a 210 with an umbee.

I have a female convict and a young Firemouth in my 150 with an adult Oscar, Argentea and Black Belt with some large Balas and there is a good harmony. The convict has been in the tank for almost 2 years and the Firemouth a couple months. Everyone's experience will vary but I've had no problem with it.
