I do smaller/younger fish with larger adult fish in a 540 gallon tank, and it works out pretty well. I have an old large Synspilum that is in charge and just not mean at all, so that's why it works. I'm growing out Zonatus (about 3-5 inches) now, and a 4 inch Trimac, and a convict.
The larger fish are the Syn, a Midas, a Bifa, 2 Argentea, and 2 Blackbelts.
They're almost all Vieja, that seems to help, too.
In my big tank, the smaller fish argue with each other, and the larger fish argue with each other. It's like they don't see larger/smaller fish as competition, so they ignore each other.
I also have a 125, and it doesn't work that way in there at all. All fish just fight in there. If I move new fish in there, it takes a long time for them to calm down and stop fighting, if they ever do.
