small predators

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never seen a ropefish in an aquarium bigger than 24" and and the knifefish usually end up about 6 inches. Both would be fine in a 29.

I've got a 35 gallon and I just asked in the Polypterus section if it would be alright to add a rope or two to it, answer was No. 40 gallon breeder for ropes, absolute minimum.

Maybe if they reached wild adult sizes...I'm of the opinion the snake/eel type fish need much less space than a regular shaped fish. Maybe it's because I keep snakes...lol.

Reasons for keeping them in bigger tanks are a) they are better in groups and b) they are fairly active.

I think ropes like to be in groups rather than single, say four of them together.
I'm looking to stock my 35 gal 30''x16''x23'' and cannot decide what to put in it, I want something thats got some agression yet looks nice. Was going to put discus but looking for more agression/movement.
:nilly:

I wouldn't go with the discus in that size tank. Lot's of options though! I used to keep my ropes in a breeder 27 gallon 24x18 and they did fine...until that unfortunate heater incident...Ropes like it hot! and keep the water level down lol. Way down.

Yeah,
I just wish it was 4' its got pretty good width.
I'd do Satanopercna Daemon but its not big enough for a group of six. :irked:

Try and upgrade tanks. Ive got a 90g with 10 ropefish and in groups there a lot more interesting. You get a big male and he will often bite smaller ropes as they pass by. Mine mix well with the leporinus and abramites headstander ive got. Also pink convicts and a couple types of africans. Pretty awesome fish but i gotta agree with polypterus on your tank not being quite big enough. With a group they tend to be pretty active swimmers at times. A 55g or 75 would be fine also imo.

You don't get to see behavior like this without groups.

That powerhead's not on btw! I would have dead ropefish.

I don't think they would be happy in a little tank either. They like to stretch out and swim accross the whole length.
Eventually I wanna setup a really long kind of shallow tank with a whole ton of them and fake reeds. It's pretty cool to watch them slither through stuff.

a 29 is a little small for an adequate sized school of exodons IMO. I'd look into maybe some SA leaf fish.

If you can find them try belenosox(pike livebearers) or try pike gouramis. both are hard to find but worth it if you can. Badis or comb tail gouramis are also different. all will due well with some cover.
