"small" predatory fish community tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Still can but just not dwarfs or smaller. Can get away with a mastecembalus dayi if U get the 120g.
Ill have to see if I can find the ones my lfs had when I looked them up it said 12 to 14. I know there's smaller ones though. Nope just looked it up 7-8" (yellow tail) is the one that my lfs gets on a regular basis. Id guess if it was small probably end up as food. If it was full grown I think it may be ok.... I like polys more so just go with that.

Welcome to MFK!

This is right down my alley; my 250l previously housed 4 African knives, 2 Senegal bichirs, two ropefish, a snakeskin gourami and Synodontis eupterus, of which only the catfish is left due to a series of unfortunate events. It was planted and very interesting to watch! A 120-150 gallon tank would give you lots of space for a wonderful display!

Must have been a great tank you’ve got, it’s a shame you’ve been through these unfortunate events. And it’s a good idea the ropefish, I didn’t think about it.

Twentyleagues, I saw a species named mastacembelus frenatus, which is believed to grow Around 15’´ if my sources are correct. Maybe it’s the species you’re looking for

Synodontis eupterus
Any time I search up that species (or a select few others) I inevitably end up finding some of Dan Hiteshew's videos.

Nicolasa13 Nicolasa13 I am in a similar situation as you. I have never had the space to own giant predators. Tank size requirements are too large and I have always lived in smaller places so far.

Looking forward to the day I can set up a couple of 300+ gallon tanks when I do end up in a large enough living space to accommodate them.

He has quite a nice specimen for sure!

It was a nice specimen. Unfortunately it died a while back.

I'm one of those "regular viewers" he talks about in his videos and for me when the catfish died I felt like my own fish died.

That really sucks! Sorry to hear :(

Hello everyone ! It has been a long time since I created this topic.

First of all, I want to thank you all for answering my questions, MFK is realy a wonderful place, with wonderful people !

I've returned here to announce that my dream finally came true : I have a nice community tank with predatory fish. It's quite a sweet story in my opinion, so let me tell it shortly.

6 months ago, a friend of mine running an aquarist shop stumbled upon several newbies giving away species they bought without proper research, and causing some problems. Among them were classics like the red tailed shark and the clown loach, but also some predatory fish like a rainbow snakehead, two hujetas, two amazone leaf fish and four freshwater butterfly fish. So my friend decided to take these fishes with him in order to sell them to people who could keep them.

But there was a problem : no one wanted the predatory fishes, and lacking space, my friend had no choice but to keep them in very small tanks with no decor, which was fine as a temporary solution, but not on the long term. He only had one solution, calling me, as he knew I had a beautiful empty tank ready for use, and I still haven't decided what to put in it. The deal was simple : I would keep these fishes, and watch them closely. If there was any problem with one of them, I would give it away as soon as my friend would find someone with a suitable tank to house it.

And so, 6 months passed. And you know what? They're all still living happily and peacefully in my tank, greeting me every day with their amazing behavior, and their stunning beauty !

I thank you all once more, and wish you a lot of pleasure in this wonderful world of fish keeping !
