Small Shovelnose Catfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As far as I know Limas are the smaller of the shovelnose cats. Still looking at potentially 2ft. So I guess it depends on your definition of small.

Yes I am aware that Limas are one of the smaller shovelnose catfish, but trusted sources tell me they get about a foot long, is there any other shovelnose that grows a similar size to lima shovelnose?

isnt there that sub species of the lima that stays smaller though?

Well this isn't a real shovelnose but pimelodus ornatus stay around 12" and are the closest looking fish outside true shovel noses that look like them in my opinion.

TBTB gave a pretty thorough explanation in divemaster99's thread about the confusion regarding Lima's Genus in the trade. Basically it's his understanding that many times Sorubim Elongatus is imported and mislabeled as Lima and one of the few differences between the two is max size with Elong being 1' and Lima being 2'.

As for Ornatus they're in the same family as shovelnoses so it's true they look very similar to those in the family labeled as shovelnoses and do top at around 11 -12 inches and are very social with each other. As such they're one of the few in that family that can be kept in a group which would make a nice display in an appropriate sized tank.

As for some of those giving advice, no offense intended but never state things as definitives when your unsure about your statement. It's fine to suggest based on what you know or heard but don't shoot down someone whose more knowledgeable advice when you don't know the ins and outs of the family and genus as your not helping the OP but are instead causing confusion. Take a softer approach such as I think or I've heard or I don't think that's correct not definitives like they're wrong unless you know for sure.

Not to derail the thread but I remember reading about that and was wondering how difficult it is to distinguish them.

According to Planetcatfish´s description in both species, " No other pimelodid genus possesses a dark horizontal stripe stretching entire length of head and body."[/I]

I have a juvenile (6") Sorumbim , so I wonder if I can ID mine (without having to wait for it to grow)
