Small Sized Gar

Are there any small species of gar? Like between 8-12 inches max?

Not true Gar, the smallest true Gar is the Florida / Spotted, which will reach around 2' max in aquaria. It will require a minimum 180g tank as an adult. There are other fish that resemble gar, such as needlefish and rocket gar that won't exceed 12''.

I would recommend a needlenose. They sorta look like gar and in fact are called it in many fish stores I see. It will still get larger than that though, just not as.

Grass or redfin pickerel (Esox americanus) are another option for a smaller, gar-shaped predator.

I have seen needlefish and i saw the size was 18 inches. Most websites say 18 to 20in. Anyone have personal experience that they found that they stay small? I dont want to be that fish keeper that crams fish i know i cant keep..

What about the rocket gar and the shortnosed gar?

Oculatus nor Platyrhinchus are the Smallest Lepisostied. That would be a tie up between Platostomus and Tropicus (in some details)...Your statement is somewhat misleading which is why correction is in order.
