Small to medium sized monitors

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, small to medium sized is relative. A Savannah Monitor is small/medium in comparison to a Komodo Dragon. I'm going to assume you are meaning around two feet or less, in which case I would suggest Ackie Monitors. One of the best species out there. Of course, if you've got the money, there are smaller ones.. King's Rock Monitors, for instance. Tiny little boogers.

how much are the king's rock monitors?

There are a few small ones out there, but ackies are (apart from timors) the coolest IMO, and also the easiest to obtain as CB, plus they are not very agressive.
Savannah monitors are not just small compared to komodo dragons. 4' isn't really big compared to most monitors you see in the pet trade.

Too much. LOL. I saw one recently for $2,500 I think..
Great inputs but how big does a Timor get to? What about the Pygmy monitors or storr's monitor from Australia? Any info on those guys?

Timors get around two feet, but are very, very shy. They spend most of their time hiding when you're around. Storr's are nice and small but like the King's, they are expensive.. $1,000-$2,000 easily.

Pygmy mulgas, ackies, timors, Kimberly rocks and if you can find them striped tails all come to mind. King rocks are nice but definitely only for the extremely elite monitor keepers. Tristis are more of a medium one that are still cheap and easier to find same with melinus. Both of those two get around 30-40" max

I think ackies are your best option here, others are typically illegal to export from australia, hideosly expensive or really really shy
