Could I use a PowerHead to suction water through a UV sterilizer? Would the Corallife turbo twist 36 watt work well? (for parasites)

I run alot of the "deep blue" brand 9 and 18 watts on my smaller tanks 125-180's and they do a good job for clear water. As for ick prevention you need a high wattage and low flow. Coral life turbo twists are also junk i had 2 break in the frist year of operation. Some of my deep blue 9 watts are 4 years old. Id recommend the 18 watt from deep blue there pretty good priced.

I have a Luguna Power clear 1800 rated for a 1800g pond on my 180g. The recommended flow is 700gph for algea kill. I run an Eheim 1250 through that UV at about 350gph and I have found that to be just about perfect. Water is always clear and I never have parasite issues. My point is, under powered/flow UV is the key if you want to run a lower wattage UV. If your setup wont allow you to run an independent UV system and you have to use the main filteration system, a higher wattage UV should be used. OP, I wouldn't have any problem using the in-tank type of UV, but if it is rated for your tank size, don't expect much pathogen kill. I would use two together.
Just my opinion.

Go to aquatraders.com its 39.90 for one for a 180g rated for 1800gph........with a uv they arent just sized to tank for the wattage but also the length. Larger tanks have larger uv's to give the water a longer contact time with the light.

If you want to stick with Corallife then get the data off their charts.

Algae requires a UV dosage 22mJ/cm^2....chart shows the 9W, 18W and 36W can do it at a reasonable flow rate.
Ich requires a UV dosage of 100mJ/cm^2....chart shows at 125gph the 18W will deliver 40mJ/cm^2 (will control some parasites but not ich). The 36W at 125gph will give you close to 100mJ/cm^2.

FYI most system design only require a UV dosage of 50mJ/cm^2. Perhap your standard is a little high and you may want to consider lowering it. Increase in temp will easily control ich.
