For a small cichlid, you could try a male/female pair of German Blue or Gold Rams, Bolivian Rams, or a single Keyhole cichlid.

Also, look into Porthole Cats or Flagtail Porthole Cats. They stay small, are very active and won't eat any other fish.

A really neat very active bottom dwelling tetra is the Hummingbird/Darter Tetra. They're not pretty, but they're very neat.
 
Pictus are active if they don't have a cave to hide in. If you have a group and only 1 cave, they become territorial. So best idea is either a couple with no homes, or a couple with as many homes as pictus. :)
