Why the wish to stay away from Dwarf Cichlids? Rams, Apistos are perfect for a tank like that.

Other options I would consider (my personal taste), are Aequidens diadema, Cleithracara maronii, Laetacara dorsigera and Laetacara curviceps, mixed with Tetra (preferably high bodied), smaller Pleco and Corydoras. You could even have a couple of Severum in that tank, though I'd avoid having the smaller dwarf Cichlids if that were the case, especially if they pair up. That and your plants would get destroyed :p

Eh, I just never cared for the look of Apistos. I will probablly be picking up some Bolivian Rams though.

Are Archocentrus Spilurus, Cockatoos, Keyholes, or HRPs okay to mix with Tetras, or would that be a disaster?

And thank you everyone for the suggestions, I really appreciate it.

As far as I know, Cockatoos are Apistos, Apistogramma cacatuoides, and I'm much the same, I don't care much for the look of Apistos', but I love Rams (3 Bolivians in a planted tank currently).

Can't speak on behalf of spilurus or HRP's as I have no experience with them, but Keyholes are community friendly fish, although large males might snap up the occasional small Tetra. Mine tend to just shovel sand all day long but they're in with larger Cichlids.

My personal pick would be Laetacara dorsigera if you can get your hands on a few of them, or curviceps if they're scarce.
