I can't tell male from female either.

The male will probably have more pointed fins like many of the Central American cichlids. If they are too young, maybe just buy a couple (if they are cheap) and grow them out. The older they get, the more sexual differences you will be able to distinguish.

 

[Stab]

In salvinis, females will have a dark blotch in the middle of a dorsal fin. Males lack this feature. This is a tell tale sign of genders with these species. On the other hand mistakes do happen and as pointed out sexing is obviously easier with larger fish
