Smaller gar?

exactly. no species for life, and a 55g should only be used as a grow-out at best...those tanks are just too narrow, and most gars can reach over 12" in their first year--

The gars I have startout in a 55, when they reach about 8-10 inches they start having major problems turning around.
 
oh what are they then? "fake gars" they're definitely not as cool as the spotted, florida or gator but they're smaller

they are considered "false gars" in the hobby ;)
 
no they're not part of the gar family, most false gars are characins (tetra family)
