Smaller gar?

seriously? you're going to argue that common names are enough to warrant them being in the same family? this is why we have scientific names and classification systems. you think the Nile perch and yellow perch are in the same family too? striped bass and largemouth bass? copperband butterfly fish and African butterfly fish?

if it weren't for your previously flame-inducing posts, we'd probably be nicer. in short, if it's not part of the family Lepisosteidae (see Lepisosteidae.net for further details and species ID) then it's not considered at "true" gar.--

huh, I didn't know that. good point about the nile and yellow perch. definitely not the same thing. I don't feel like I was bashing anyone in previous posts, just stating an opinion. (and obviously people can't handle that) But anyways, thanks for the info :)

i know this isn't a true gar but what about a Rocket Gar.

No rocket gars aren't true gars but they are cool i have 2 right now , also they only get to about 10 inch or so
 
To answer the OP's question, I believe the smallest true gar would be the Spotted. I might be wrong on that point.

But there is no gar suitable for a 55 gallon aquarium. Try pike characins.
