What is the smallest species of eel? And also could a 55g hold any eel for life? (assuming not)

Zig zag eels are a species of spiny eels (not true eels), but if you don't mind that, then there are a few species that could do fine in a 55 gallon. Peacock eels which get to 10-12", zig zags which get to 8", and Macrognathus pancalus which gets to 8", would all work for your tank.
