Smallest group of juveniles to get a pair

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha I'm taking 4 man, I'm sure we should each get a pair out of the 9 fish even if its 2males and 7 females or 7males and 2 females. Very keen for them to bad we cannot check them out first.

true story, so rare here that in 15 years of fish keeping it will be the first time i have seen them, besides a huge male in the national zoo 10 years ago

Mate I feel your pain, they aren't even available here in NZ. Sucks being so isolated some time. Fingers crossed you can get a pair, then they won't be rare for long!

If either of you guys gets a pair, they won't be rare for long.
Seems to always go in cycles, I got a bag of 10 juvies at the local aquarium society auction for a buck, and it was one of at least half dozen bags.
Same went for haitiensus when I was breeding them, I was having a hard time giving them away.

I must have gotten lucky with my dovii because I bought a group of four at 2", and wound up with 2 males and 2 females! I kept the dominant male and the female he seemed to prefer, and gave the other pair to a friend to grow out. His trio of JDs killed the male after a few months tho and my female died protecting their first batch of eggs, so I traded a freddy to get the other female dovii back lol. Surprisingly my male accepted her right away and they had fry every month, but I didn't get a single call from my craigslist ads so I started trading them with a lfs for store credit and eventually used them as feeders for my FH juvies...

So IME, dovii are prolific breeders and aren't picky with their mates, but the fry are nearly impossible to even give away. You're almost guaranteed two pairs from a group of 6-8 tho, I have 6 RTM juvies now with a strong pair already formed and the other male has 3 females to choose from ;)

but the fry are nearly impossible to even give away

Given that it's taken the OP 15 years to get hold of them I don't think he'll have trouble moving the fry for a while! The market in SA is probably a bit different to the US where they've been established in the hobby for decades...

look honestly rate the market in SA is far from keen on dovii fry , but the way i look at it i can always use clean feeder, if fish breed it show they are happy, and if i was going to be living somewhere my hole life as a pet the least me keeper could do is give me a F@#k to pass the time, plus i love watching the spawning process. also hope it gets easier for others once a few pairs are established
