smallest monitor

does it need to be 10"?
can i just raise the ambient humidity a little?

I think you might be able to get away with providing a lot of hides that fit the monitors tightly and some peat moss.

However substrate will still be best since they can customize to their own needs.

ok.
if i do kind of a mound at one end, with some of the moss and some half buried cork bark. would that be ok? it could kind of dig into the mound but if needed could find shelter elswhere.

also would the moss need to be constantly watered?

Here's a thought. Some monitor owners have a burrow bin or two at one end of the enclosure, or sometimes both. Just a thought

Anyway you would have to ask one of the users around here about the mound idea. When I started, I was told to keep about a foot of substrate for the monitor throughout the enclosure and they trived via that method and never really experimented with anything other than making the substrate deeper.

hmm, what's a burrow bin?
like a box w/ a hole in it for them to curl up into?

More like a box of dirt substrate, so it doesn't have be throughout the entire enclosure. You can elevate it if you want.

i'm fine with it being everywhere i just can see putting 10" of dirt in a tank 24" tall. wouldn't they climb out easily?

i suppose i could just weigh the lid down more.

I have bred timor's, argus ,argusxflavi and blue tree's. I think a timor is more what your looking for. My next suggestion would be the ackie. as for a hide. There are alot of things you can do. So just use your imagination. A box with dirt is good. As for timor monitors they seem to like a hide box with lots of dead leaves they can burrow under.(shredded paper works just as well and is a lot easier to deal with) for ackies, argus, flavi's ect... I prefer a sand substrate, build it up on one side (just a little) then place a large diameter piece of Pvc on top (angle it slightly so the entrance will be elevated) and then cover the pipe except the opening with more sand to make a mound with a hole/cave.) I usually keep the undertank heater under the mound so the heat stays pretty high in the cave. and on the other end of the tank the sand should level out and have a water dish large enough for soaking. (they do this alot) I usually keep a flat piece of rock as a ramp up to the top of the water container and use a heat lamp over that end. Make sure to change water and clean container daily. they love to purge while in the water if you know what I mean.

Actually, that is quite common to put 12" of dirt in a 24" tall enclosure. I would not put sand in it though -- unless it is mixed.

but what i'm saying is will that be a problem with them trying to climb out?
if i do the pvc do they need to be able to turn around in it?
if i did a PC tube that lead to a chamber of the tank(maybe like a rubbermaid or a plexiglassed off section), below substrate level where it could hide? or would that just be a wasted effort as the pvc alone would be fine?
