Ok, I went over to my pond today and the smallmouth bass fry in there are twice as big as the ones I am raising in an aquarium! Any ideas as to why the ones in the aquarium are so small?
Ok, so I collected some of the ones in my pond and they are huge compared to the ones in the aquarium. I think the size difference is due to the presence of some kind of small isopod that the pond fry love. Will post pics soon.
I use pond water to try to replicate the pond as close as possible. I think it might have been the lack of the small isopod in the aquarium. I added a bunch (probably at least 100,000) of them today along with 5 bass from the pond. Both groups of fry get along fine so far. The fry in the aquarium still look like fry; the pond ones are about 3/4 in. long and actually look like little bass lol.
perhaps the food you were feeding in the tank needed to be the correct size for the fry to actually eat. I'm sure once the fry get bigger they will catch up in size.
Ok. I was feeding them red worms, mosquito larvae, and crushed turtle pellets and they ate all of them; I watched them eat the food. Maybe they just needed a large quantity of tiny foods versus a small quantity of small foods. I hope they catch up in size.
