Hey guys im just wondering what the optimal aquarium conditions should be for a smallmouth, i just took a test strip sample and the GH was 180, KH 240, ph was 9 (yikes), NO2 was 0 and NO3 was 80...... if someone could tell me what these should be and how to fix it that'd be awesome. if im posting this in the wrong section i apologize

Yeah you'd get more help in the Natives section probably.I've read that they become quite tame and responsive pet fish after they settle in.

smallmouth can tolerate a wide variety of water chemistries, but need cold water. i cant remember what acceptable nitrate ranges are, but i think you're ok with 80. like i said, just make sure the water is cold (60-65 degrees)

how do i keep the water temp down, cus right now its around 70-75 degrees, but he doesnt seem to mind.... and yeah i've had him for about 5-6 months now and he's alot more calm. forgot my son put him in the live well on our boat so when we got home we heard something splashing around when we were cleaning out the boat. he eats gold fish, crickets and worms... i heard you should always keep the ph between 6.5-8, are there any safe household products you could use to bring it down? such as baking soda?

I don't know about household materials, but adding driftwood has been known to lower PH in most cases.

I'd leave the pH as is it is. I wouldn't mess with pH unless the actual survival/health of the fish would be affected

You dont need to use a heater on the tank, the room temp. should be enough and in the warmer months if your tank is not in an air conditionrd room, the temp should not get too high for it,if it does then you will need extra oxygen.

As for heat, If you see your temp get to a point that you don't think the fish appreciates, just float a frozen bottle of water in it... A cheap homemade chiller.

i never said anything about heating the tank....i said how would i keep the temperature down... it stays pretty much room temp or a bit lower, and its in an air conditions/heated room (summer/winter)

thats what he suggested, a way to cool down the tank. he said float a frozen bottle of water in it
