im thinking about getting a smallie and a large mouth do u guys think they could coexist? im pretty sure they do in the wild and my friend had them in the same tank for a bit but hes now saying they cant be together.... any ideas about this?

Yes, you would need a big tank. I have never kept smallies, but from what I've gathered of them, the temperament should be about right. The real problem is gonna be temp. Smallies don't do well at a higher temp for very long. You might need a chiller, depending on ambient temp of the tank. Some tank parameters would help, like size, temp, and decor. Also, the LMB get larger than the smallies do, so there might be some problems there, but if you get them small, they should do okay.

yea i have a 5 inch lmb now and im hoping on getting an equaly small smalie but i dont have the tank yet so im undecided. im gona keep the big tank in my basement once i get it so it may be cool enough i hope

It could very well be cool enough. I think you want to keep the temp below 65 for the smallies, although I'm not positive. The LMB would be comfy at that temp too. For a LMB and a smallie, I would start with a tank at least 4'x2' footprint to start with, although you might just wanna get a 225.
Please let us know how it goes, and please post pics.

Have you ever kept them for the long term at that temp?

yes. and we catch them tons of them in the local quarry, where the summer surface temp gets close to 80 degrees. also a few shallow ponds full of them. they do not mind warmer water.

Well that's interesting. i was under the impression they needed cooler water than the LMB. Well, I was wrong once before, it may happen again! :) Is the quarry very deep? I've seen some that have very strong temperature breaks about 10' down.

smallmouth bass Do operate at lower temperatures better thats why smallies are more previalent in northern states
