smally+lmb= peace?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I kept 2 5 inchers in the same tank for about a month (one SM and one LG). But they didn't like each other so i got rid of the largmouth becuse the smallie was more fun to keep and better looking.

Smallies live in water up to 75 - 80 deg dureing the summer. So you wont need a chiller or a heater.

I would say go for it. Mine were only in a 30 gallon. Im sure with something like a 125 you would be fine up till they get about a foot long.

ive had both smallie and large mouth u cant put them together in a small tank at all ,very very territorial witnessed it first hand with three inch bass the bigger one killed the littler one not even a hour in the tank. large mouth are more aggressive than smallies, and u dont need a chiller for smallies just room temp had i had a smallie for 2 yrs when i was a kid , smallies also grow slower then large mouths..

thanks guys im planning on no smaller than a 125 once i get the dough and currently i have a lmb in a 20 so i gota start saving up quick lol i thought smallies could survive in a warm tank my friend had one in a heated tank with a lmb and a few other fish and all that happen was it lost most of its color and had a little bit color variation. u guys do think that in a semi planted 125+ the two fish wouldnt kill eachother right?

yes it does get very deep, but thats not where u find the bass. water is VERY clear. probably 20 ft visibility on some days, my guess is this would mean alot of sunlight penetration hence fairly uniform temp to a significant depth? any insight? place is also full of bucketmouths i should add.

trial and error, if i were u i would try to add them at the same time at a similare size so the one in the tank doesnt beat the ***** out of the other one your goin to add to the tank..

I had a smallie and a florida largemouth both at about 5 inches in a 150 and the smallie kicked the s*** out of the largemouth every time I tried to introduce him.

thats because the smallie already established the tank as its territory and diddnt even give the lrg mouth a fightin chance to get use to the tank..

Theres far too many variables to accurately predict the thermocline. However, you said that you catch them in shallow water, which would indicate a tolerance for warmer temperatures.
I've never kept smallies, I'd have to go a long way to get some, and break the law, so don't really want to. It seems as though the people with experience in this species are saying warmer temperatures are fine, so I say go for it. I wonder if they are healthier at lower temps though, as the reason there aren't any in my area is the warmer temps. Well, try it and find out!

i fish alot in pit mines and there the surface temp is 70f and when you get only a few feet down it is in the 50-60f range, even in water <10ft...most of the big smallies come out of 20f sipended in the oak forest in 45f...i say forest cause the tops of the trees are 1' below the surface and you can see the bass down there

so i should wait till i build a tank and then go out and get a smallie the same size as my lbm and intruduce them together?
