smelly fish tank

Check around the lids and top of the tank for any uneaten or rotting food.

+1.

I had this happen to me one time, found one pellet rotting under the rim of tbe tank, just above the water line. Incredibly strong nasty smell from just one single pellet.

This is the worst, when the pellets just kinda melt on the top of the tank.

Maybe some more info would help? what are you feeding your fish, and how often? Do you have a substrate in the tank, if so how thick is it? and do you stir it up weekly during water changes?

After all, something has to be causing the smell and unless you locate the problem its not going to leave...

At some point if the source is not located, it may be time to look in other places. Maybe an overful litterbox, the dirty laundry hamper, dirty socks under the sofa, long unemptied bathroom wastebasket etc, good luck.

I feed massivore pellets, krill, black worms, and minnows. I have about an inch thick of gravel on the bottom maybe a little more than that and I don't stir the gravel up if I just change water I do vacuum the gravel though

Fwiw, if I feed nls thera+ my tank will stink like straight up sewer for 3 days. I quit using it and the smell dissipated after a few wc's. Tested several times... tank smelled like normal aquaria then fed thera+ and the tank smelt like all hell again. I can repeat this anytime I try it. 500g bottle that's nearly full still.

When I set up a new tank it kept smelling but once cycled it had no smell. Even when the filter sponge was thick with debris it had no smell.

Is this tank new? Or is something dead or fish food stuck somewhere?

That being said sand substrate is cleaner and smell less than gravel.
