HI guys I set up my 120 gallon on Monday. I plan on throwing 2 Peacock bass in there. I have noticed when i open up the tank lid It smells like there is 10 wet ass dogs in my tank it smells horrible. I have Cascade 1500 EHeim 2217 and ac 110 on their for filtration. Only fish in there is a pleco right now i would really appreciate any help on what to do or what is causing this.. Thanks:confused:

Have you tested your water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? Did you use any "seeding" material from an already established filter?

You are probably smelling the dirty water due to not having a properly cycled tank. I recommend buying an API freshwater master test kit. Avoid the test strips, they are uneconomical and inaccurate.

wat media is in the filters?
you can add some activated carbon to kill the smell
but I don't recommend using it long term

Do you have any natural wood in there? Some tannins should make it smell more like soil or leaves, maybe alittle aquarium salt might help. My water is light Oolong tea color from Mopani & Malaysian wood and the water smells like potting soil. check PH after wood leaches. Im sure you already know about vaccuming gravel and water changes. Peacock bass will show more red in stained water too,I think.

I've had this happen with newly set up tanks. Not sure exactly what causes it, but it smells HORRIBLE. It goes away within a week or two... as mentioned above you can also throw carbon in.

Yes Carbon will definitely help with the smell. I use carbon in all my tanks all the time and change it monthly. A lot of people say dont use carbon but I love carbon. Maybe those people dont want to pay the hefty prices to always be changing carbon in their tanks. I buy carbon by the 60 lbs bag. Very expensive stuff.

Look into my eyes... ...you are getting sleepy... ...very sleepy... ...Laticauda will not steer you wrong... ...Laticauda say you have new tank syndrone... ...when you wake up, you'll have the urge to send lots of money to chompers.

...wake up.

What she said.

Totally off subject, but you very rarely use punctuation marks, and your sentences are always single lined. Any reasoning behind this?
