hello i have a 180 with 4 lm bass the water is crystal clear everything is 0 but it has a fishy smell to it and my wife says i need to get rid of the tank if i cant make it go away is there anything i can do to get rid of the smell

Add carbon and keep up with water changes. Whats the filter like.

First thing is first, the readings on a cycled tank should not be all 0. You should have a Nitrate reading of 40 or below depending on the fish you keep and wether or not the tank is planted. The fact that you have a zero Nitrate reading is suggesting your tank is not cycled thus the smell. A fully cyled tank with proper weekly water changes will not smell. That's not to say if you stick your nose into the tank you you won't smell anything but you shouldn't be smelling anything by just walking by or sitting in the room itself.

Is it the actual water or is it the tank??

I ask because mine has a glass plate between the tank and the cover and that is what tends to get smelly.

I give mine a good rinse and then its fine.

I understand your situation, my bf gets moody when he smells anything fishy or animally in the house (i also have cats) so, buy some scented candles ;)

Setup a man cave and post a no girls allowed sign! You don't go messing around in her linen closet and telling her that it smells too snuggle fresh!*

How long has the tank been setup, how often do you gravel vac/water change and what are you running for filtration and circulation?

*Pure assumption, if your the kinda guy that messes around with linen closets thats fine and I accept you as you are.

How long have you had it set up? When was the last time you did a water change? How much do you change? What's your maintenance schedule like?

I have the same problem with my turtle tank...

Every now and then, I mess up and change too much water or clean the filter and do a water change... I don't run bio media, yet. It takes about a week or two for the water quality to get back to normal... The worse thing about it is you can't really do much but wait it out... The more I tried to "fix it" the worse it gets... Extra water changes don't help (I learned that the first time). I also tried to add more black carbon, more filtration, more water movement, but nothing but time helped...

I picked up a few Glade Plugins... You could only smell the tank above it and right next to it a few hours later.

Two weeks later, my water is crystal clear and tank only has a hint of a fish/turtle odor.
