Point well taken.
There is one thing though that i noticed,i cleaned all of the filter pads a few days ago and it seemed that thats when the odor started could this have caused the odor in anyways??

I agree with Gasha. Get cannisters. I run XP3s and XP4s. I also run HOB filters on my tanks too but not as my primary filtration and I change the media in those alot. Gets atleast some of the crap out of the system that much quicker. You can find some good deals on filters on ebay and on here. You dont want to skimp on the quality of your filtration.

Did you spill any water? Spilled tank water can get pretty stanky. Also, is your tank cycling again now as a result?

Ph 7.0 amonia 0ppm not sure on nitrates.

O-ppm for ammonia tells me you have the right amount of filtration (biological), but your nitrates might be through the roof ( shouldn't be as you mentioned frequent water changes, but check in case ) so my suggestion is simply to run carbon/zeo carb for a while until the smell dissapears. Also, I'd clean out that filter in tank water. Oh, and maybe get an air pump or 2 for some extra water movement. Just my opinion.

there are other filters out there like eheim... even maybe fluval, if you want to shop around.. xp3 will be best bet for money... don't get xp4 its not worth the mark up at all and people talk about them breaking... with that said i would buy one of those 3 brands... if you don't have money rena is the way... even if you do have the money it's a great deal!

semper how is you xp4?

Is the water cloudy? I have a white haze over my tank and it smelled pretty bad and I figured it was a bacterial bloom...anything like that sounds similar?

My XP4 has been doing well. I would agree with you on getting the XP3 instead though. The performance increase doesnt match the mark up in $ and it doesnt fit under my store bought stands. They shouldve made it shorter and fatter. Fluvals on the other hand, I had trouble with. Thats why I switched to Renas. Until recently I was running 5 Renas, I wanted to make it as easy as possible for my wife to take care of the fish while I was deployed.
