I don't know if smelt would provide all the nutrients for a fish, or even a decent amount. I know massivore is made up of a few different things, where as smelt is just well... as fish.

I also would see if smelt has thiamine blockers in their bodies like feeder fish.. that's a main cause for HITH.

I just stick with massivore. Expensive, but I only have 2 fish that eat it.

I do know that I can collect 60 smelt every 3 days in the spring, more if I have some other people with me

Stuff the smelt with Massivor pellets.

I would personally stick with the massivors. The hikari products all seem to be very nutritional and have a high palatability for the picky eaters. On another note, it seems like the growth and color has been much more rapid and vibrant with the massivor vs live feeders, frozen blood worms, mysis shrimp, krill or silversides. If only my odoe pike would eat the stuff >:/

I agree.......Thats why I will STILL get the 35lbs. deal on smelt, BUT purchase just enough MASSIVORE for the month........As for the food=food, not true.........The MASSIVORE contains a little more vitamins......On the other han, smelt are belly filling and FUN to watch being gobbled up...........

My fish consumes about 5-6 lbs of food a week, I'd go broke if they're on massivore exclusively...

I varied their diets between 4 -5 lbs of smelt, 1-2 lbs of shrimp, a little of krill (beta carotene for color), seafood mix (squid, octopus, clams), a handful of algae wafers and massivore per week.
