Smelt?

I feed smelt to my ray and clown knife and noticed the extreme oily surface. I thaw and wash them before they go in the tank. I feed whole too, neve cut up.

I've also noticed a big difference when feeding smelt. Even if the water's surface doesn't get a sheen to it, I need to rinse my pre-filters and sponges in the HOB's much more often. But at the same time I think the oils etc. are probably better for the overall health of the fish.

I have not been able to find any silverside in SoCal L.A. Area

I feed smelt almost exclusively and have not had problem with oil, but I do run a drip system. I soak the smelt in water to thaw it, then drain it, then dump it in.

Silversides are only found in the Atlantic Ocean, there collected in the cool waters around Canada down to New jersey.

You can buy them from lfs. Sally's brand sells them frozen.

Bringing this one back from the past.. How big a smelt can you feed whole without being worried about the bones?

Any size! In nature nobody worries about the bones, either.
