Second hand smoke, and cig filters in the water, are two completely different things. That's like comparing the smoke from a stick of dynamite, to a stick of dynamite exploding under water. One of those is definitely toxic to fish, and it's not the smoke part.

Hello; This is a fair assessment. The results of a particular experimental setup should not be generalized. The links cited the material the filters are made from as well as the stuff trapped from the tobacco smoke. In addition to the filters trapping some stuff from the tobacco smoke, the smokers body removes some of the stuff.

There would likely need to be experimental setups for filtered and non filtered cigarettes and other individual factors as well. There should be only one variable that differs from a control setup.

So the evidence in the links is not specific enough about the actual tobacco smoke in a fish room to answer the OP's question. I guess we are back to speculation. Good catch.

I don't know how many of you live in big cities but wouldn't the air pollution be just as bad as second hand smoke. Odd Ball replied with a quote from the humane society I personally would not believe a word they speak. Sadly many of our DMV's are becoming heavily influenced by the humane society.
I personally will not condem smokers because I don't want to pick up on the taxes they pay. Rember to that they pay these taxes freely unlike the rest of us.
Most people don't smoke in their house or car for one reason resale value. They now tell us we can not smoke in the house or car with our children but do nothing to stop the drugs killing kids on the street. Lets face it there is no real proof of the ill effects of smoking on general health. People who have never smoked or been around smokers die of lung cancer just like smokers do.
These are just my feelings and I should mention I am not a smoker.

sorry its just funny, oh my god. is cooking bacon ok for my fish? I am worried my carpet puts out formaldehyde is this ok fo my fish? Okay, the first bit I agree with, myself I don't have kids. But if I ever do I'm sure I would rather them smoke cigarettes than crack. There are worse things out there than cigarettes, we can both agree with this.

However I think you need to Google your second statement.. If you can report back with proper proof that it doesn't harm your health (good luck!) then I may ask my hubby for a cig when he gets home. But I don't like your chances.. Also, studies done in the 70's don't count.

If people feel the need to claim things that are clearly not true others are going to question it. If I told you that a 3 inch goldfish killed an 8 inch oscar I'm sure that you would want hard proof before you would even consider it to be true.. And it would be perfectly fair of you to do so.. I agree with your posts about water changes, they make all the difference. A good WC/test schedule is the difference between living fish and thriving fish (and if your too slack dying fish) but I would still be interested in seeing some study results as well. I started this thread because I couldn't find much on google and was interested to see if anyone had looked into it. I didn't think it would get this much attention to be honest..
