Smoking Inside With Aquariums

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's a matter of risk. Sure, some people swear you can smoke around your pets without consequence, but a few short decades ago the scientific consensus was that smoking tobacco isn't bad or even is good for you.

We don't know everything, and it's naive to think that we do... and sometimes the accepted establishment of information turns out to be wrong... dead wrong.

If you're okay with burning highly potent toxic substances around your animals, I cant stop you. But it sure as hell isn't allowed to happen around MY animals.

Not to mention, if you have to ask... is it really worth the risk?

I don't let people smoke in my house anyway, so its not something I personally have to worry about. I just wanted to know if someone with better Google skills than me had found info related to the topic. So far I've gotten a post about the humane society and a link to some interesting info about the 'butts'.. Everything else has just been peoples $0.02, I don't mind opinions, but ultimately facts win out. If the facts say it won't harm the fish, then it shouldn't harm the fish. But if the facts say otherwise...

Hello; having taught biology with units on ecology included I have dealt with the sort of question you posed in this thread. In most personal environmental impact questions, others things as well as with tobacco, there will be folks who do not see any possible impact. There will also be those who see danger without much evidence to go on. We often have to make decisions without a full understanding of the facts.
If the evidence you seek is not forthcoming, you will have to make a judgment call. For me there is no question as I cannot stand to be around tobacco smoke. I do not have any smoking in my home. I smoked in the past as did both of my ex-wives. I cannot say with any confidence that the smoke had a negative effect on the fish. My gut feeling is that some effect is likely, but not real significant.
When I do not know for sure about something I often take precautions that may prove unnecessary. If you have control of the home environment then banning tobacco smoke is an option. If someone else has control or smokes in the home in spite of your wishes, then it seems unlikely you will get the proof you seek. At least so far.

I cant think of a single professional animal keeper who works in any kind of zoo, aquarium, any kind of professional facility who would find it acceptable to smoke around their subjects, especially something as toxic as commercial tobacco... we all spend countless hours (and lots of money) doing water changes, enclosure maintenance, making sure our pets get proper nutrition. We all go the extra mile because our animals are our passion.
I think a logical extension from that train of thought is making sure your animals have an environment free of toxic smoke. Maybe it's just me.

Ok so a lot of you think I am a nut. How many of you use air fresheners in your house to keep it smelling nice but are saying that smoking is bad. Lets face some of you are probably putting worse things in the air in your house than what smoking would bring. Most of us take better care of our fish than we do our selves.
It was stated earlier here you can find what ever you want to prove your point on the internet. Yes there are a ton of articles out there that state smoking and second hand smoke are going to kill us. A lot of these are written by doctors the same doctors who tell us that aspretame is a safe replacement for sugar. So if I doubt everything I read on the internet or hear on TV then yes I am a nut.
As for me I am going to lean towards what pops and RD have stated on this topic. If we do our regular water changes and take care of our fish and other pets smoking is probably the least of their worries.

your argument is totally flawed. the consensus in the medical community is that smoking is bad for you. you cant compare it to products that have medical professionals saying it is bad or it is not bad. all medical professionals agree that smoking and second hand smoke is bad for you and the people around you. the only thing correct about what you said is this...
yes I am a nut.

I wish I knew how to delete this thread.. Its turning into a mass argument (my bad, I should of realised this would happen)

If anyone has any more FACTUAL INFORMATION about this can they please PM it to me?..

Also if anyone knows how to delete a thread, please let me know..

im sure a mod will say "this has ran its course" and lock it soon.

Awesome.. I want it gone.. So much hassle, so many debates, and so few backed up with proof.. So I'm giving up on this thread right.. Abouts... Now.

Just as I thought ehh you are a sheep that will follow and do what ever the the powers that be tell you to do. You seem to be really good at using only a portion of what someone says to make your point. You have never read what is in the food you feed your fish. A lot of the ingredients in fish food are toxins as well. Sadly if we feed live food to our fish we are monsters to some but lets face it commercial food is just easier. How ever we continue to feed it but turn and now want to find a way to say that smoking is going to harm our fish. It is human nature to join a group and attack something. It doesn't matter if what we are attacking is good or bad. Smoking is the flavor of the day to blame the worlds health problems on. Personally I don't like the smell of some one smoking or second hand smoke. But as my Dad has always stated you don't hear of some one having 1 too many smkes. Then getting in their car and going and having an accident. How ever alchohol will have this result. Where are the doctors standing and sayig to ban drinking and driving not there. Before this gets away from the topic I;ll bring it back. Drinking to much around your fish is probably far more harmful to them. As it impares your reactions and thought processes. Am I off topic yes but so is condeming what ever I say.
The thread was will smoking around our fish harm them. My opinion is no there are far worse thing in our homes that could effect our fish.

Oh bill..... I'm not reading that lol
