They prefer snails, but can be supplemented with frozen bloodworms and sometimes meaty pellets (catfish pellets, shrimp pellets).

You can always set up a 5g and breed pond snails there for constant supply. Overfeed and they'll boom in no time.

Are they prolific breeders? Would they harm fish or shrimp at all?

There have been isolated reports of them opportunistically eating shrimp. They do not typically target them. I have not heard of them going after fish at all. They did take down a golfball sized bridgesii snail I was housing them with. They lay singular eggs which take quite awhile to hatch and the baby snails are very slow growing, so no..they do not overpopulate quickly.
