I used to think that my snails wouldn't come out of the tank either. Until my wife and I came home and found my raquet ball sized yellow apple snail on the floor. I picked it up, looked at it, and it was closed up tight. So I threw it back into the tank. It opened up within about 10 minutes, and started moving around.
(We had that snail for over a year. We got it in a bag of feeders, and it was about the size of a pencil eraser.)
After the whole tank jumping experience, and the fact that my wife saw it behind the tank, on the floor, the stupid thing died about 2 weeks later.
