We got an algae eater yesterday from petsmart, and there was a bit of detritus in the bottom of the bag. My daughter released them, then noticed later that evening that one of the pieces of gravel from the bag was moving :WHOA: It's a snail of some kind...too tiny to take a pic of with our cameras. White conical shell, half the width of my pinky nail. There were mystery snails in same tank but this looks nothing like the mystery snail. Almost looks what I believe is called a periwinkle shell that you find in the ocean.
Ideas and recommendations?

ooohhhh...i don't have plants yet (well, i do, but they are semi-aquatic and will be planted in my flowerbed soon) but i do want them. The mystery snails eat them too? I never liked snails much either, just cuz they're kinda weird looking and i stepped on a garden snail once. Took 20 minutes of scrubbing to get it off my bare foot. Really bad association, aquatic or not.
Anyway, i WAS considering a mystery snail to suck up algae in the future, but not if it will eat my plants!!

Mystery snails will eat algae and vegetables you provide them, however, if you do not provide them with an adequate food source, they WILL not starve themselves, and will find the food available to them (in this case, your plants.)

I find it hard to believe it's a mystery snail, but I do suppose it's possible. Would you be able to find a picture online what it looks like and post it here?

Most likely it's a Trumpet Snail, which is not good. They can pretty easily take over your tank! As Miss Raychel stated, I would get rid of it.

I have Mystery Snails in my 55 and haven't had any issues with them eating the plants. Make sure the top of your tank is sealed up well though...they climb out of the water to lay their eggs :)

This is what it looks like. I don't think it's a mystery snail...didn't think it could be a shrimp either, though.

May be just a bit more conical. Soon as dayak gets home i'll have him pull it and send out a pic, even if it sucks.

Yes, it's a malayan trumpet snail. They reproduce asexually, so you will have a ga-jillion in no time. Get that bad boy out and put it in the garbage!

Or you could put it in a jar with some water and lettuce to see how prolific they are.

Thank you! On my way to do so, have a vase and will hold it for the kids. I appreciate your help!
