Why use a snail? Its not gonna clean your tank really. You should just clean it yourself.

I agree w/ this. I have no need for clean-up crews, because I don't over feed, and scrub that algae off the glass.

If you want snails, then I would go w/ apple snails, or mystery snails. The golden mystery will add a little color too.

I wouldn't get trumpet snails, because the can be a problem w/ over population and can even cause problems in filters.

just googled the mts and I think I might give them a try. hopefully I can find some of the bigger size ones. thanks alot
Even if not as long as you bury them or drop them in at night they will have enogh time to get under. I have used them in all my cichliid tanks and they are wonderful.

As long as you don't have an undergravel filter you would be fine. Rarely do they clim on filter tubes, but if they do are easily removed with mainteneace.

Apple snails are not efficient algae eaters. You can forget these ones. They are easily victimized eventually by large cichlids. Don't underestimate your cichlids' wit.

Cichlidfish, the only reason snails overpopulate is overfeed. That is rarely an issue if you know how to cut back on feeding your fish. A lot of people unfortunately fail to understand just how beneficial MTS are and still blame the snails for managing to sustain their number as a result of abundant food supply. I do not have issues with my snails overpopulating. It is down to how you maintain your tank.

Furthermore, may I ask which snails are an issue with sand? I have kept dozens of species of snails with sand, gravel and barebottom setups with no issues.

what about a big apple snail. i have some with my devils and they dont even get noticed, i use them in all my tanks.
Thats due to individual aggression. Your RDs might be more tolerant then his, also may be in part because you raised them with snails. By the sounds of it his will pick these appart.
