SNAILS... DIE DIE DIE

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Crush some of the snails in place so they het the idea faster.

You may want ot think the Exodons thru a little more as they are not going to clam down :grinno:.

Good luck with the loaches.

Copper isn't good for the biofiltration. Solving the problem naturally would be better, but coppersafe could be a last resort option.

Heres a wacky idea. The only tanks I have that never have pond snails in them are the tanks im breeding applesnails in.The applesnails easily outcompete the pond snails for food and end up wiping them out.Once the pond snails are gone its much easier to get rid of golball sized snails than the tiny ones

Not even the fish. The disastrous consequence of having dead snails around the tank is terrible.:shakehead

kk ill test these clown loaches... Havey if this works ur gonna be a lil more richer
While loaches do relish snails as part of their diet, are you thinking of keeping them long-term? If not, then please do not resort to this. Keep crushing every snail you can see and combine with lettuce baiting.

The cheapest way to do this, the most effective and the most probable is to skip the loaches and crush the snails by hand and every nihgt chuck in a peice or two of cucumber/zuchini/lettuce etc on the floor with a spoon as a weight and collect in the morning. The vegetable slice should have lots of snails on it. Repeat as necessary.
Another problem is that you are likely feeding too much. Cutting down of food means the snails starve and die off.

When you buy a fish, you buy it for life. Not just to 'help' you out for a week.

The easiest, cheapest, and most sure-fire way to get rid of snails is a potato cut in half and leave it in for at least an hour. Pull it out with snails attached and throw them away. Do this for several times, and eventually you will get rid of them all. Cucumber does not work as well for a few reasons. One it doesn't sink, and two it does not attract snails as fast. Clown loaches can work, but often do not, and are not a long term solution. Copper will work, but will also wipe out your inverts, plants, and bio-filter. Salt is another option, but will again affect inverts, and plants. Larger snails isn't a good option, as the larger snails will not outcompete all, and you still have snails.

Copper wont harm your bacteria but some snails can close up watertight and wait till its safe to emerge again weeks/months later.

No unwanted snails in my house. I can't breed them fast enough. The loaches are hungry!

i still vote for the clown loaches. i had a horrible snail problem and i bought one to clear
them out and he did in 48hrs. even though i didn't particulary like them i ended up buying another and will probably some more when i get a bigger tank. they are very unique fishes and quite the characters.

P.S. if you get them don't freak out when they lay on the bottom upside down or on their sides :)
