Hi guys i seem to have a breakout of snails in my poly tank, can i put the usual anti snail stuff in or would these affect the polys? If so what can i use?

Cheers steve

i have used the best treatment clown loaches like 10 of them..... they are beastly at cleaning the tank of snails. just get some they do a really good job. and idk if the stuff will hurt the bichirs.

I was going to put in my first post (apart from cl) i did have some in there with them but as they seem to stress my polys and the polys tried to eat them and have got alot bigger since i dont think this is an option, but thanks for the reply.

Cheers steve

Do a search on snails ought to have some good ideas on how to rid them. Also depends on what kind of snails you do have.

when you see them remove them by hand its safer snail killer products to to be copper based bichirs do not tolerate copper very well-Anne

I'd pick up assassin snails or remove them manually. I'm not a fan of picking up extra fish to get rid of a small problem.

FWIW, try blanching some lettuce, zucchini, etc. and letting it sit overnight. In the morning it should be crawling with snails and you can just toss it. Repeat for a week or so and the poplulation will drop drastically.

Cheers anne im taking as many out as i can when i do a water change, and il try to pick them out when i see them.

Cheers steve

Thanks topshotta thats a great idea.

Hello,

i also had a massive breakout of snails in one of my poly tanks - the result: Heavy damage of my planting.
So i decided to set some predatory snails (Anentome helena) into the tank ... after a short time they (i set only five specimens into the tank!) regulated the population of the other snails.
I would not use any of these chemical snail killers - it would also damage the biological filtration due to destroying the population of your "good" bacteria!!! This is alway a problem when using these "medications" - also against algae. Snails or algae are an optical problem or may damage plants after a longer time - but chemical treatment causes real problems when killing the biological filtration!

Greetings
Uwe

Agreed Don't use chemicals i try to never use them

Just scoop them out and feed the tank less and clean the substrate a little better the polys will eat them and other then being an eye sore a few snails are totally fine in a poly tank

Loaches are also a fun way to get rid of alot of snails doesn't have to be clowns all loaches love snails

I really like Uwes idea though i didn't know there were preditory freshwater snails
