Thankfully my 3 MTS are big enough that they haven't been eaten by the swarm of my 8 zebra loaches in the couple of months that I've had my tank running... But I'd like a big snail or two, because 1) i like snails, and 2) i want them to clean up the crud that's on the sand gravel....

So, do I have any options with my loaches, or will they pretty much bother any snail to death? I fear that even if I get a golf ball sized mystery snail they'll pick at it until it crawls into its shell and dies in there... The MTSs that I have don't get eaten but they do get bothered enough where they may not come out of their shells for hours... So I usually just take my all powerful chop stick and push them back into the sand...

In my experience Botiine loaches will potentailly eat all types of snails. If I dropped in an apple snail they would hollow it out in minutes

MTS would be your safest bet.lol They can bury under the sand so this protects them. Some loaches such as Syncrossus helodes are far more dangerous due to their elongated snout which makes them quite versatile in digging out inverts that bury underground.

I don't have a tank that has both loaches and MTS. The loaches clean them out completely. Even our plant tank at the store is virtually snail free.

I have 2 striatas and 4 kubotas, they've eatten about 99% the MTS snails that are in my tank (100 gal), I've seen them tackle and devour a large mystery snail (lesson learned there) but don't seem the bother the 8 olive nirite snails that share the tank......

Out of my loaches the striata are the least aggressive toward the applesnails. But I have dozens of pomacea bridgsii at any given time so I dont worry if the loaches eat one here and there. If theres mts and ramshorns in the tank they usually leave the briggs alone.
